Interaction

OSR have responded to cases involving fisheries interaction. This term is used to describe animals which have been injured or killed by such things as "bycatch" (caught in live netting from vessels and/or jammed in winches) caught in shore based netting (salmon fisheries) or caught in discarded or lost netting. One poor seal pup had severe neck wounds that were the result of an entanglement with a discarded fishing net.

Increasingly around the world, fishermen are using seals and other marine mammals as scapegoats for declining fish populations. This has resulted in many instances of illegal shooting and poisoning. Some of the victims have been treated at OSR's premises. One small pup had an unfortunate run in with a person who shot its flipper.

Here are, just some, of these cases:

Severe neck wound in Common pup.
A Grey seal pup caught in discarded netting.
"Sue Ellen" a Grey seal shot in the eye.

The continuing conflict between seals and fishermen has resulted in some security changes at OSR's facility. Due to threats of violence from disgruntled local fishermen, surveillance cameras have been installed on the buildings that house the seals.
